Although I disagree that the group d...Interesting.
Although I disagree that the group did not seek to deprecate other photographic forms.
The manifesto specifically calls out the offending techniques used by “pictorialists”. There is no question in my mind of the agenda of establishing a new norm by marginalizing the other. Which is precisely what occurred. It was well received and instituted, and the group was indeed made up of photography masters. By that I mean they understood the means by which make their work, a skill owned by pictorialists as well.
But for me, as great as these photographers were, I think they missed the mark. It is sort of a “what came first the chicken or the egg” conundrum.
Had photography been around before paintings then there would not have been anything to compare it to, and then say “don’t do it that way”. It was just a convenient way to promote one’s passion over another.
All art is inspired, interpreted and expressed…even the work of those in Group F64. As “pure” as they preferred to call their approach, it was still riddled with techniques that rendered contrasts and details amplified when compared to reality. There was no escape from interpretation or from supposed “ideological conventions “.
Injecting the terms “modern” and “serious” also led to the assumptions that if you did not conform to this philosophy, that you were neither. A bit presumptuous and arrogant, regardless of its intent.
With all respect due to their skills.
MarkMark Wadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05379003801731955134noreply@blogger.com
